February 1, 2007 Pilot guitar program to foster interest in music while providing therapy and fun Shreveport, La. In a move that combines children’s love of music with the therapeutic benefits of playing a guitar, the James Burton Foundation has teamed with Shriners Hospitals for Children in Shreveport to institute a guitar education and therapy program at the pediatric orthopaedic hospital. Legendary Shreveport guitarist and former Elvis Presley bandmate James Burton officially set the program in motion on Thursday, February 1st at 10:00 a.m. at Shriners Hospital in Shreveport with the presentation of 20 acoustic guitars and stands to be used in a unique pilot music program with Shriners Hospitals. Burton said the guitars will be used in music education programs that accomplish the goals of the foundation and Shriners Hospitals. “The James Burton Foundation is dedicated to helping children realize their potential with music,” Burton said. “So it’s only natural that we join forces with Shriners Hospitals, which have for so long helped children reach their physical potential. This is an exciting moment in our efforts to spread our love of music, and we’re thrilled to begin this new endeavor with Shriners.” The Burton venture with Shriners Hospital will institute inpatient music education for children with orthopaedic difficulties, and is designed to accommodate children of all physical abilities. Trained hospital instructors and volunteers will review guitar basics, focusing on guitar positions, strumming and rhythm in an effort to foster an interest in music. In addition, the program will involve the integration of the instruments into the intensive occupational therapy patients receive daily at the hospital, which serves as the region’s only dedicated pediatric orthopaedic facility. Hospital Administrator Kim Green said the program is an exciting method of patient-focused care that serves to address the unique physical needs of patients while providing an outlet for enjoyment. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Blanchard Elementary School welcomed James Burton & Linda Johnson, Foundation Chair – Kids R Rockin’ Program
